Cultural Differences?

Something really interesting in London.  On the streets, no one really makes eye contact with you.  When they do, it's  very rare and usually they aren't British or from the area.

I'm so used to walking down the streets in the U.S. and locking eyes with hundreds of people everyday.  Even if I don't acknowledge them, I still look at them.

It's just strange to me, that's all.

I had this problem in New York. I'm from Texas and we hold doors open for one another and say "Thank You" and "Excuse me" or "Sorry". I went with two other girls and we got strange looks each time we did it. It was out of habit put pretty soon we went out of our way to do it just to get a laugh. I still love New York though!

I would say this is more of a London thing, the further North you get in the UK the friendlier everyone gets! I notice this in London loads even shop assistants aren't as friendly towards their customers, but I always try and make an effort to stick with my Scottish friendly habits!

Yeah it's just so strange, like I wouldn't even say they aren't friendly, just that it's almost like they don't even notice you!

I felt the same way in London. It's such a busy and bustling city....seems like people are in too much of a hurry to make eye contact.
